Description

The image of Our Lady of the Sign is one of the very first iconographic images of the Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin is presented in a gesture of intercessory prayer with an image in front of her of the Divine Child. The reverse side of the piece is dedicated to one of the twelve great feasts of the Russian Orthodox Church: the Annunciation. The event commemorates the proclamation by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary of the future birth of Jesus Christ.
