Description

The image of the Virgin and Child with the angelic host relates the miraculous events of Christmas. To the sides are the shepherds and the magi, and the stories of the Bathing of the Infant Christ and Joseph's Doubts are depicted on the bottom. The reverse side of the piece is decorated with the miraculous icon of the “Reigning” Mother of God, which belongs to the Constantinople school of icons, in which the Mother of God is seated with Jesus on a throne, and the Virgin is holding the royal regalia of the sceptre and orb. The “Reigning” Icon of Our Lady, which was acquired in the 20th century, has become one the main relics of modern Russia.
