Description

The Icon of Our Lady of Jerusalem, according to tradition, is thought to have been painted in the 15th year after the Ascension of the Lord in Gethsemane, and it was the first of the images of the Virgin Mary created by Luke the Evangelist. The icon depicts Christ addressing the Virgin Mary, holding a scroll in His left hand, and offering a blessing with two fingers pressed together. The reverse side of the piece is dedicated to the twelfth feast of the Assumption of the Virgin – one of the 12 Great Feasts – where the image of the feast is reproduced according to ancient iconography.
