Image of Edessa

This picturesquely bordered round icon shows the face of the Saviour on a background of flowing cloth. This sacred image of Christ is known as the Image of Edessa. According to the Bible, an image miraculously appeared on the cloth after the Saviour had wiped his face with it. On the reverse are four six-winged seraphim joined in the image by an equal-pointed Greek cross.
