This piece is made in one of the earliest forms of the cross, dating back to the Christianization of ancient Rus. Based on ancient Byzantine traditions, the cross forms an image of the Tree of the Cross, which is a symbol of the Resurrection. At the centre of the composition is the Golgotha Cross, surrounded by emblems of the Saviour in relief against lily-petal-shaped arms. The Twelve Apostles (the followers and disciples of Christ) are represented by twelve “pearls” on the outside of the arms. On the reverse are the words of the prayer “Let God Arise”.
