This icon in the form of a military shield depicts Saint George the Victorious. Saint George is depicted sitting upon a war horse and wearing a suit of armour whilst he strikes the dragon which writhes underneath his horse’s hooves. This is the most vivid scene from the life of the early Christian saint, and stands as an allegory for the defeat of paganism. On the reverse of the icon is an image of the Holy Cross against a background of the walls of Jerusalem and the Instruments of the Passion of the Christ.
