This icon in the form of a military shield depicts Archangel Michael, one of the most important angels of the Heavenly Host. Archangel Michael is one of the seven angels of the highest order in the church hierarchy. He is referred to as the Archistrategos, which means “supreme warrior”, for it is Michael’s mission to lead Christ’s Army. On the reverse of the icon is an image of the Holy Cross against a background of the walls of Jerusalem and the Instruments of the Holy Passion.
