The Great Martyr Saint George the Victorious is honoured as the patron saint of Orthodox warfare and an aide to farmers and field workers. George was a senior commander in the Roman army and suffered at the hands of the persecutors of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, who tried in vain to persuade George to renounce his faith. The saint’s strength of faith encouraged many others to turn to Christianity.
